Interim studies to focus on electricity, Kiamichi River project and wind farm taxes

Members of the Oklahoma House Energy and Natural Resources Committee already know they will meet in October to focus on a number of related issues.

During the hearing on Tuesday, October 22, the committee will spend the entire day discussing water, energy generation and the wind industry.

The committee will focus on the topic of Energy Generation during the first presentation from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. As explained in a listing of House interim studies, the disccussion will center around “Advancing Electric Generation for Future Economic Development.”

The Kiamichi River in southeast Oklahoma will be discussed from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The river has been the source of controversy since a Texas company proposed construction of a hydroelectric dam along the river and a transmission line to carry electricity to Texas. The project proposed by the Southeast Oklahoma Power Corp. is opposed by residents, at least one lawmaker and the Choctaw Nation.

The Power Corp. wants to divert water from the Kiamichi River in Pushmataha County to generate electricity for sites in Texas. Committee members were notified, “This study will focus on the Kiamichi River and the impact of a hydroelectric dam along with the possibility of designating the Kiamichi River as a scenic river under the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Act.”

Oklahoma’s Wind Industry Tax policy will be the subject to be discussed by the committee from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. As the study indicated, the hearing will be to “Evaluate and compare Oklahoma’s Wind Industry Tax Policy to other regional
wind producing states.”
