Frac sand truckers stage protest at Permian Basin plants

Members of the Truckers Movement for Justice flag down semi-truck drivers to share educational and promotional material as they protests outside of the Capital Sand mine Monday, July 1, 2024, in Monahans. The group, led by Billy Randel, protested across the Permian Basin Monday, calling for better wages and working conditions within the trucking industry.

Frac sand truckers staged a one-day protest on Monday in West Texas by blocking entrances to frac sand mines.

They demonstrated against low wages and working conditions as part of an organized labor movement in the Permian Basin.

The Texas Tribune reported the labor protest demonstration was carried out in three cities—Kermit, Mohanans and Odessa. An estimated dozen truckers were joined by local environmental activists in cars. The demonstration was designed to get the attention of employers and resulted in a slowdown of production in the Basin.

A similar protest was held last year.
