Residents outside the city of Denver who live near Aurora Reservoir are staging a fight against the plans of oil and gas company Civitas to drill and operate 166 wells near the lake.
Civitas claims the project will produce $235 million in tax revenue for Arapaho County but r esidents worry the fracking of the wells near their homes will present environmental and health issues.
The company finally got approval to go before the state’s Energy and Carbon Management Commission and at the same time assured the EPA its wells would not be close to a Superfund site. Civitas went public with the project two years ago. The 166 new wells and 14 existing horizontal wells will be on 32,000 of land and drilling, according to reports, will be about 7,000 feet under the Aurora Reservoir.
