Biofuels refineries rank close to oil refineries for polluting the air

The biofuels plants we heard and read so much about in Iowa, Illinois and other corn-producing states might not be as helpful for the environment as supporters contend—at least based on a study by one environmental group. They might be emitting as many harmful polllutants as oil refineries.

A new report by the Environmental Integrity Project, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. contends the refineries emit significant amounts of compounds that foul the air and threaten public health. The study found the amount of air pollutants released from the biofuel refineries adds up to 12.9 million pounds a year, which isn’t far from the 14.5 million pounds emitted from oil refineries.

The findings are based on data maintained by the Environmental Protection Agency, reported The Minnesota Reformer.
