Supreme Court to decide water fight over Rio Grande river

Texas and New Mexico are in a water fight—with the federal government and their case was heard this week by the U.S. Supreme Court.

At the heart of the matter is Rio Grande Compact of 1938 reached between the two states in an agreement over how to divide the wataer from the Rio Grande river….57% to New Mexico and 43% to Texas.

But the government stepped in and argued whether the agreement reached by the two states could be approved without the input of the federal government, reported The Hill.

The litigation has been underway for the past 10 years starting in 2014 when Texas sued New Mexico for taking too much water.
