The U.S. Energy Information Administration has lost a court fight with bitcoin miners in Texas who fought the EIA’s effort to collect data on their energy use.
A federal court in Waco ruled against the EIA, declaring the attempt by the government was likely “an abuse of discretion.”
In a lawsuit filed against the U.S. Energy Department, members of a group called Texas Blockchain Council called it an “unlawful so-called emergency collection of information from many of TBC’s members.” It also said the proposed survey had been “unlawfully approved” by the department’s Office of Management and Budget.
“This is a case about sloppy government process, contrived and self-inflicted urgency, and invasive government data collection,” the complaint argued, according to a report by International Business Times.
