Mice lead to $42 million fine against Family Dollar company in Arkansas

From the Arkansas Business Morning Roundup comes the story of Family Dollar in West Memphis being fined nearly $42 million by the Justice Department over its “rodent-infested warehouse.”

The $41.7 million fine, described as the largest-ever monetary criminal penalty in a food safety case, came after the firm pleaded guilty in court.

Arkansas Business reported the company was charged with “causing food, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics to become adulterated  while being held under insanitary conditions.”

Family Dollar admitted it had “mouse problems” at the warehouse but continued shipping to more than 400 stores in Arkansas.

The company is constructing a $100 million replacement warehouse.
