Little Rock moves ahead with big city solar power project

City leaders in Little Rock, Arkansas approved development of a 4.9 megawatt solar array that they claim will eventually supply nearly 70% of the city’s electricity needs.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports Little Rock directors okayed a contract with Sun Hog Solar LLC, a construction subsidiary of Scenic Hill Solar, an Arkansas based company.

As the paper reported, the plan will allow the city of Little Rock to take advantage of tax credit rules. Under the deal, Little Rock will have to pay all construction costs before it connects to the net-metering facility by Sept. 30.

The city believes its savings will total $27 million over a 20-year period, and also bring it closer to its goal of powering 100% of its operations using clean energy by 2030.
