Crude oil prices changed little in Tuesday’s trading while Oklahoma energy stocks suffered losses for the day, including a 5% decline for Chesapeake Energy, one week after it announced a multi-billion dollar merger with Southwestern Energy of Texas.
The crude prices faced pressure from the dollar as it rose to its highest in a month, thanks to continued worries about the escalating tensions in the Middle East and their impact on energy supplies.
US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate crude, fell 28 cents or 0.4% to settle at $72.40 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Global benchmark, Brent crude, gained 14 cents or 0.2% and finished at $78.29 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. At one point in the trading, Brent was up a dollar a barrel.
February natural gas fell 41 cents to $2.90 per 1,000 cubic feet.
Not a good day for Oklahoma energy stocks. Not one of the firms we usually list recorded a gain following Tuesday’s trading. Chesapeake Energy dropped more than 5%.
