Oil industry sees drop in rig activity in Oklahoma and the nation

After a week where the nation’s oil and gas rig count saw an increase, the latest Baker Hughes rig count revealed drops in activity across the U.S. and in Oklahoma. That means more rigs were put into storage.

The report released on Friday showed Oklahoma’s count declined one to 36 rigs. A year ago, there were 67 oil and gas rigs active in the state.

Nationally, the count dropped by 7 to 618 and the declined included a loss of 8 oil rigs, leaving 496 still active. The number of gas rigs increased one to 118.

However, the nation’s count remains 152 fewer than the 770 reported one year ago. The decline included 117 oil rigs and 37 gas rigs.

Texas saw a drop of 7 rigs, leaving 304 active in the state while New Mexico added 4 rigs to hit 104. North Dakota’s count fell one to 29 rigs and Louisiana experienced a decline of one rig, leaving 41 still active.

There is still drilling in Kansas and it grew by one rig in the past week, reaching a total of 36, according to the Red Top Rig Report published by the Independent Oil and Gas Service Inc.

Colorado was unchanged with its count of 16 rigs while Ohio gained two rigs for a total of 12. Pennsylvania fell by two to 20 rigs and West Virginia added one to hit 8 rigs.

Wyoming’s count slipped one to 17 rigs.

The Permian Basin, the largest shale producer in the country, dropped by 3 rigs to 310 while the Eagle Ford in South Texas saw no change from its count of 51 rigs.

The Haynesville count dropped one to 38 and the Marcellus fell one to 28 rigs. The Williston count dropped by one to 32 active rigs.

The Ardmore Woodford remained at one rig and the Arkoma Woodford continued more than a month of no drilling activity, reported by Baker Hughes Co. The Cana Woodford count dropped by one to 13 and the Barnett remained void of any reported rig activity.

The D-J Basin saw no change with its count of 14 rigs while the Granite Wash continued with 6 rigs. The Mississippian stayed at one rig and the Utica gained 2 rigs for a total of 12.
