PSO gets high marks from Sierra Club’s latest climate change report

Public Service Company of Oklahoma was one of only two American utilities to get an “A” in the Sierra Club’s latest report tracking how many utilities are unprepared” to comply with the Biden administration’s pledge to cut U.S. electricity-sector emissions by 80 percent by 2030 compared to a 2005 baseline.

The other was Northern Indiana Public Service Co. The report concluded very few U.S. utilities are taking action to combat climate change. For a second straight year, PSO was at the top of the list of the 77 companies reviewed by the Sierra Club.

To earn a top grade on the report’s A to F scale, utilities must be on course to close all existing coal plants by 2030, halt plans to build new gas plants, and deploy much more solar, wind and other carbon-free generation capacity, along with batteries and other energy storage resources.

Oklahoma Gas and Electric was not ranked in the most recent report nor in last year’s report. Empire District, another electric provider in Oklahoma, also received low rankings.
