A false report that the U.S. and Iran might be close to a deal on oil exports sent crude oil prices falling more than $3 a barrel before the claim was denied by the White House and the price tumble was stopped.
The phony report stated that the U.S. might ease some sanctions in exchange for Iran reducing uranium enrichment.
“This report is false and misleading,” said a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, referring to an article on the Middle East Eye website.
West Texas Intermediate crude fell $1.11 or 1.5% to $71.42 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Global benchmark Brent crude finished down 97 cents or 1.3% to close at $75.98 a barrel no ICE Futures Europe.
Natural gas down 0.03 at $2.32 – change 1.40%
Thursday brought a mixed day for Oklahoma energy stocks. Among those with strong gains were Empire Petroleum at 4% and NGL Energy Partners at 2%. Magellan Midstream dropped nearly 1.5%.
Other energy stocks recorded more losses than gains according to the Texas Energy Report.
