Flood awareness month proclaimed by Governor Stitt

Flooding leads to evacuations in Oklahoma, Arkansas | MPR News

In Oklahoma, May has historically been the month with the highest number of flood disasters. Governor Kevin Stitt has proclaimed May 2023 as Flood Awareness Month.

Flooding causes billions of dollars in property damage and numerous deaths each year in the United States. However, many people are unaware that losses due to flooding are not covered under most homeowners or business insurance policies. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) allows residents of participating communities to purchase affordable flood insurance in exchange for regulating floodplain development.

The Oklahoma Water Resources Board coordinates the NFIP in Oklahoma. More information on the OWRB’s Floodplain Management Program is available at https://bit.ly/3LqphjJ.
