Fears that U.S. politicians will fail to agree on a new debt ceiling and perhaps trigger a default led to a drop in crude oil prices on Friday.
US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate crude for July dropped 25 cents or 0.3% to close at $71.69 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Brent crude, the global benchmark, slipped 28 cents or 0.8% and finished at $75.58 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe.
June natural gas was unchanged at $2.59 per 1,000 cubic feet.
Oklahoma energy stocks were mixed as some recorded gains while others lost ground on Friday. Empire Petroleum gained more than 3% for the day while other stocks recorded minimal losses.
