Using federal money from the Biden administration’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the state of New Mexico launched its plugging of abandoned wells in September of last year.
Since then it managed to plug 23 orphan wells according to the Carlsbad Current-Argus. The paper reported that in the past five years, New Mexico’s Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department plugged 206 wells.
