Kansas legislature considers control over wind tower blinking lights

Wind farms are transforming the Kansas landscape. Here's an effort to tone down their lights | KMUW

With 44 wind farms in the state of Kansas, the Kansas legislature continues working on possible legislation to do something about the growing complaints of the blinking red wind tower lights at night.

Residents don’t like them and want controls about when and how often they blink, disturbing the night-time sky above the state. A State House committee held a recent hearing but took no immediate action on a bill to require installation of light-mitigating technology on new wind turbines constructed after July 1 of this year, reported the Kansas Reflector.

The report indicated the next-generation lighting equipment would replace thee all-night flickering lights with a radar system that switched lights on whenever aircraft were detected.
