Oklahoma City’s Continental Resources, the biggest oil driller in the state of North Dakota announced Wednesday plans to commit $250 million to fund a pipeline to gather carbon dioxide produced by ethanol plants.
It is the company’s first venture into the growing world of carbon capture projects and will create the largest carbon capture and sequestration project of its kind in the world.
Company founder Harold Hamm was in North Dakota for the announcement of the investment into the Summit Carbon Solutions’ $4.5 billion pipeline at an ethanol plant near the town of Casselton in the Williston Basin. The town is located west of Fargo along Interstate 94.
“Continental Resources has been in North Dakota for over 25 years. As the state’s largest leaseholder and producer, no company knows the geology better than we do. The regulatory environment is second to none and we are grateful to North Dakota’s leadership, who has been laying the groundwork for a project like this and been a leader in sequestration for nearly 20 years. We look forward to highlighting their leadership once again as North Dakota becomes the nexus for this project,” said Hamm.
Summit Carbon Solutions will primarily capture CO2 from ethanol plants and other industrial sources in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. The CO2 will be aggregated and transported to North Dakota via pipeline, where it will be safely and permanently sequestered in extensively researched subsurface geologic formations.
The project has commitments from 31 partner ethanol facilities to deliver more than 8.0 million metric tons per annum (MMtpa) of CO2, with initial pipeline capacity of 12.0 MMtpa, and expansion capabilities to handle up to 20.0 MMtpa.

Continental Resources agreed to the $250 million commitment to a project Berry believes will be a model for the world.

Summit Carbon Solutions was launched in 2021 by Summit Agricultural Group as a new business platform aiming to develop the world’s largest carbon capture and storage project focused in the Midwestern region of the U.S.
According to the release, Summit, a diversified agribusiness operator and investment manager with operations in the U.S. and Brazil, began developing plans for the Summit Carbon Solutions project and its partnerships with ethanol producers after recognizing the significant growth in demand for low carbon fuels in 2019.
Summit Carbon Solutions partnered with a select group of leading biorefiners located in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota to execute the first phase of the project in 2021 and has since garnered commitments from 31 partner ethanol facilities across the Midwest.

The Summit Carbon Solutions project is on track to achieve its target of being operational in the first half of 2024. The project currently has 8 million metric tons per annum (MMmtpa) of CO₂ currently committed for sequestration. Initial pipeline capacity is 12 MMmtpa with capability to scale up to 20 MMmtpa.
