Oklahoma ranked 9th in sending electricity to other states in 2020

The U.S. Energy Information Administration released figures this week that Pennsylvania sent more electricity to neighboring states in 2020 while Oklahoma was ranked ninth highest.
While nearly 78 million megawatthours of electricity generated in Pennsylvania was delivered to neighboring states during the year, Oklahoma appeared to have distributed about 16 million megawatthours to its neighboring states in the same time period.
The EIA’s State Electricity Profiles showed than 230 million MWh of electricity was generated in Pennsylvania during 2020, exceeding electricity generation in all states except for Texas and Florida.
Oklahoma’s total electricity generation was more than 82 MWh of electricity. Its Electricity retail sales totaled 62,299,305 MWh in 2020, and after direct use and transmission losses, the remaining electricity was sent to other states.
However, the EIA also stated Oklahoma generated two-fifths of its electricity from renewable resources in 2020, an increase from one-tenth a decade ago. Most of that power is from wind energy, but other renewable energy resources contribute to state generation, including hydropower and, to a lesser extent, biomass and solar energy.80 In 2020, wind energy accounted for 35% of Oklahoma’s in-state net generation, a larger share than in all other states except Iowa and Kansas.
