A Senate Energy committee on Thursday sent a 10-10 tie vote to the full Senate on the nomination of Biden’s pick to be Director of the Bureau of Land Management after Republicans accused her of lying to them.
Sen. James Lankford, a member of the Energy and Natural Resources and other Republicans called for the President to withdraw the name of Tracy Stone-Manning after catching her n lies during her testimony in a confirmation hearing. Lankford followed through with his opposition by voting against Stone-Manning in the Thursday hearing.
The nomination earlier had won the support of Democratic chairman Joe Manchin who came out in support of Stone-Manning, an environmental extremist who led a tree-spiking effort in the forests of Montana in the 1980s.
Lankford’s questions focused on previous testimony before the committee in which Ms. Stone-Manning provided apparently false or misleading testimony under oath. Additionally, Lankford discussed some of her environmental extremist writings on the negative impact children have on the environment.
Earlier this month, Lankford joined all of the Republican members of ENR to send a letter to President Biden calling on him to withdraw her nomination. In the letter, the senators highlighted Ms. Stone-Manning’s false and misleading statements in a sworn statement to the Committee, also pointing out her extremist activities that disqualify her from this important position.
The senators included an appendix with the letter that details the facts of the case and demonstrates why Stone-Manning’s nomination must be withdrawn.
Lankford: …She wrote this, ‘A population that treads lighter still treads. The origins of our abuses is us. If there were fewer of us we would have less impact. We must consume less, and more importantly we must breed fewer consuming humans.’ Now maybe that’s an opinion shared by a lot of people on this dais. I don’t share that opinion…I just don’t philosophically agree with this candidate. I don’t think this is the right direction for us to be able to go as a Committee. I do think honesty’s important, but I do think the concept of ‘children are the problem that we have in our world’ is something I do not agree with. So, no, I cannot support this nominee.
