Fort Smith city leaders face $22 million Air Force decision

Ebbing Air National Guard Base chosen to host fighter jet training site

City leaders in Fort Smith, Arkansas just across the state line with Oklahoma will have a decision to make next week—whether to kick in $22 million for a runway extension so Ebbing Air National Guard Base can become the site of a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II training center.

The Air Force announced last week that Ebbing was the preferred location to create the flight training center for Foreign Military Sales participants as well as the new home for a Singaporean General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon training unit.

The Air Force anticipates a final decision in spring 2023 reported the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
