The large crack that led to the May 11 shutdown of the Interstate 40 bridge over the Mississippi River wasn’t exactly a shock to the Federal Highway Administration.
Reports show the agency was aware that the steel beam in question was made of a grade of steel the Administration found was susceptible to cracks. It is the same kind of steel that led to the 2011 closing of a bridge on I-64 over the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana reported the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
