Energy companies including ConocoPhillips, Chevron and Marathon Oil were handed a victory Monday by the Supreme Court in their fight with the city of Baltimore which filed suit three years ago blaming them climate change including rising sea levels and extreme weather.
The Justices, in a 7-1 ruling said the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals erred in its decision that it lacked jurisdiction to consider the efforts of the companies for bringing the case into federal court.
The ruling came after the high court heard arguments in January in the lawsuit brought by Baltimore against more than a dozen major oil and gas companies. The suit was one of more than 20 others like it brought by cities and states in recent years in which the energy companies are accused of being responsible for the costs of climate change.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor was the dissenting vote reported The Hill.
