House committee starts hearings on anti-oil and gas bills

A series of bills targeting the oil and gas industry in the wake of the Biden administration’s moves to halt drilling on public land and kill the Keystone XL pipeline will go before a House subcommittee this week in Washington.

The House Energy and Mineral Resources subcommittee plans hearings on Tuesday on several bills including one called the Ending Taxpayer Welfare for Oil and Gas Companies Act authored by California Democratic Congresswoman Katie Porter.

“Public lands are a collective national treasure that belong to the American people—polluters that want to extract energy on these lands owe taxpayers a fair price,” she said in announcing H.R. 1517 last week.

In filing the bill, Rep. Porter called oil and gas drillers “polluters” and wants to increase onshore royalty rates from 12.5% to 18.75%; raise minimum bids from $2 to $5 and boost the per-acre rental rates from the current $1.50 for the first 5 years to $3.

With the support of full committee chairman, Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona, the measure is likely to pass. It also includes increased inspection fees and penalties on oil and gas firms that extract resources from public lands.

How much does Grijalva support the measure? He claims oil and gas companies have exploited public resources and “paid us pennies for decades now.”

He also thinks Congresswoman Porter is one of the “greatest” consumer champions in Congress.

“With her helping to lead the way, the Natural Resources Committee and the Democratic majority are going to end corporate giveaway culture and return economic power to the American people where it belongs.”

In the 2019 impeachment efforts of former President Trump, the congresswoman appeared on Capitol Hill in a Bat Woman costume.

“As House Democrats prepare to officially blow up their Majority with impeachment, (Porter) is prancing around dressed as Batman,” the National Republican Congressional Committee said in a tweet. “This is how seriously these clowns are taking impeachment.”
