Texas governor bans out-of-state natural gas sales

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott moved this week to stop the out-of-state sales of any natural gas produced in Texas as millions of residents deal with rolling blackouts and frigid winter weather.

He issued the order and noted that some producers had been exporting their natural gas to areas outside the state.

“I have issued an order, effective today, through February the 21st, requiring those producers that have been shipping to locations outside of Texas to, instead, sell that natural gas to Texas power generators, that will also increase the ability of gas-powered generators in Texas to increase power to the Texas power grid,” Abbott said.

Cheniere Energy Inc., a Houston company that receives natural gas from Oklahoma’s STACK play through its recently-completed Midship pipeline announced a temporary cut of natural gas and electricity consumption to help the Texas power grid.

The move was made before Gov. Abbott made his announcement.
