Tenaska Kiamichi offers college scholarships to Kiowa High School students

High school seniors in the Pittsburg County town of Kiowa are being offered $12,000 in academic college scholarships by Kiowa Power Partners, LLC, owner of the Tenaska Kiamichi Generating Station near the town. Shell Energy North America L.P. is also a sponsor.

Tenaska, one of the leading independent power producers in the United States, manages scholarship programs in communities where its generating facilities are located.

To date, approximately $800,000 in scholarships have been given out to roughly 900 students across the United States. The program has awarded 140 scholarships totaling $150,000 to Kiowa High School students to date.

Kiowa High School students graduating in spring 2021 who will be attending a two- or four-year post-secondary education program at an accredited institution may apply. Scholarship applications are available through school guidance counselors. Completed applications must be submitted no later than Feb. 12. Winners will be announced in the spring. Eight $1,500 scholarships will be awarded.

“Tenaska is proud to support Kiowa’s future leaders through this scholarship program – providing bright, promising high school seniors an opportunity to realize their potential and further their education,” said Frank Carelli, plant manager for Tenaska Kiamichi Generating Station.

A committee at Tenaska’s headquarters will select the college-bound seniors to receive the scholarships. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate that they are prepared for college study, have good character and rank in the top half of their class.

Fueled by clean-burning natural gas, Tenaska Kiamichi produces 1,220 megawatts of electricity for Shell Energy, which markets the power.

The plant is a large taxpayer in Pittsburg County, contributing more than $48.2 million in property taxes to date. In 2019, the plant injected approximately $6.8 million in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors into the area economy. In addition, employees volunteered more than 300 hours to support local community and charitable projects.

Kiowa Power Partners, LLC is comprised of affiliates of Tenaska, Tyr Energy, Inc. and JERA Co., Inc.
