Reclaiming abandoned coal mines in North Dakota is a slow process

 

Like Oklahoma’s decades long effort to rid the state of abandoned oil and gas wells, North Dakota is doing the same with former coal mines.

But it is a long and slow process in the state where there is an estimated 1,500 to 1,800 known abandoned coal mines. As The Dickinson Press reported, only four strip coal mines are being reclaimed this week.
