Marathon Oil seeing strong results in Bakken but plans more drilling in Oklahoma

While Houston’s Marathon Oil is considered a top explorer in Oklahoma’s STACK and SCOOP plays, it’s also expanding operations in North Dakota’s Bakken Shale.

The company recently announced it’s producing strong results at a new four-well pad site in Dunn County, North Dakota. It’s also known as the Ajax area of the Bakken shale basin.

But Marathon indicated the early results saw an average well production of 2,400 BOED.

“Strong early results in Ajax mark another important step forward in our ongoing efforts to extend the core of our Bakken acreage position, building upon recent successful core extension tests,” said Marathon Chief Executive Lee Tillman.

Marathon is considered a major player in the Bakken but so is Oklahoma’s Continental Resources.

In November, Tillman said Marathon’s strongest production results are coming from South Texas’ Eagle Ford shale and the Bakken. He also cited the transition to more development drilling in Oklahoma and steady progression in the northern Permian Basin in West Texas and into New Mexico.
