Nation’s rig count climbs while Oklahoma’s slips

The latest oil and gas rig counts saw Oklahoma’s slip by one to 141 while the national numbers rose by 4 to reach 1,067.

Baker Hughes in Houston and the Independent Oil and Gas Association in Wichita reported the figures on Friday. The U.S. count included the addition of 4 oil rigs to reach a total of 873 while the number of gas rigs rose by one to hit 194.

The U.S. count is 154 more than a year ago. In Canada, the rig count dropped by 4 to 191. Canada’s count is also 11 fewer than a year ago when the count was 201.

Oklahoma’s count of 141 compares to 124 a year ago. The count in Kansas, according to the Redtop Rig Report dropped eleven to reach 30. The report indicated Kansas saw 36 new drilling permits issued this past week, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,454 compared to the 1,140 a year ago. Texas saw an addition of 8 rigs to reach 540.

Staying the same were Louisiana at 64 and Wyoming at 30. Colorado’s count stayed at 33 while New Mexico’s numbers dropped two to reach 100 working oil and gas rigs. In North Dakota, the count remained the same as a week ago when there were 52 working rigs.

Of the oil plays, the Woodfords in Oklahoma remained at eleven, same as a week ago. The Granite Wash added a rig to reach 14 while the Mississippian remained at 7.

The Eagle Ford added two to hit 79 while the Permian grew by one to reach 490. The Marcellus slipped one to reach 55 while the Williston stayed at 52. The D-J Niobrara remained at 28.
