Enid flour mill creates its own kind of energy

It’s a different kind of energy. But it’s still energy.  Wheat and flour. Even OGE recognizes it.

And this week, Archer Daniels Midland dedicated $32 million in improvements to its operations in Enid where Gov. Mary Fallin assisted during ceremonies on Monday.

“This flour mill has served as an important hub for the region’s wheat harvest for decades,” said the Governor. “The upgrades that we see here have made the facility even better for our farmers.”

The mill was constructed in 1928 then underwent renovations in August 2017.

“This is the breadbasket of America … this is an area that has abundant and quality wheat,” said Kevin Like, ADM vice president of sales.

As the Enid News and Eagle reported, an increased demand forced the company to make the millions in improvements which included a high-speed packer and an automated milling unit.

The plant’s renovation even got the attention of OGE which built a power station next to the mill to meet its energy needs.

The company actually combined two separate mills in the renovation and the one mill has production capability of 1.5 million pounds.

“This mill is state-of-the-art, the newest of new technology available in milling,” said Like. “The other mills had outlived their useful lives and this updated facility is honestly symbolic … of where ADM milling is going as a global leader in milling.”

Prior to renovations, the facility boasted a full-time staff of around 70. Despite the new tech and automated processes, it still employs the same number of people, Like said.

“The people of this region are tremendous, they’re wonderful and they’re very hardworking,” he said. “We’ve added some technology, but I have no doubt that the work force here will adapt to the increased technological needs that we have.”
