OGE installs new smart LEDs to light up historic Route 66 in Bethany

Oklahoma Gas and Electric and the city of Bethany plan a celebration on Wednesday over the installation of new smart LED lighting on the historic Route 66.

Bethany is the first municipality in the OGE service area to fully adopt LED street lighting.  City leaders and OGE officials will gather Wednesday morning for the 9:30 ceremony at the flag pole between Asbury and College in the media. Bethany Mayor KP Westmoreland and others will take part in a ribbon cutting. OGE officials will also demonstrate monitoring capabilities for the smart LEDs. The new lights will turn on automatically at dusk each evening.

Building upon the innovative Smart Grid platform, OG&E is replacing 250,000 street and security lights with smart LED lights throughout its service area. Smart LED lights allow OG&E to remotely and instantaneously monitor and control lights, and receive a digital notification if a lamp is in need of maintenance. OG&E will implement LED lighting through attrition; as current street lights fail, the existing fixture will be replaced with a smart LED fixture. The City of Bethany is the first municipality to opt-in for early adoption.

Full deployment for the remainder of OG&E’s service area is estimated by 2023.
