20,000 Miles without an oil change? It’s what ExxonMobil’s promoting

If ExxonMobil’s experiment proves a success, those quick oil-change places might be seriously hurting for business in the future.

The energy company has launched a cross-country road trip to prove its latest product offering, Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil will allow cars to go 20,000 miles without an oil change.

The road trip started at the company’s Research and engineering Technology Center in Paulsboro, New Jersey.  two cars, a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox LS and a 2014 Ford Fusion Titanium will travel 20,000 miles across 48 states experiencing a variety of climates.

The company says the different altitudes, climates, and driving styles over the next four months will demonstrate whether Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil will protect the engines for 20,000 miles.

Both cars will be inspected and equipped for the full 20,000 mile road trip on a single Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil change.  Four “pit stops” will be made at about 5,000 miles and oil samples will be taken to check the oil.

“We know it’s hard to believe that you can go 20,000 miles on just one oil change,” said Benjamin Pinkert, brand manager at ExxonMobil. “That’s why we are delighted to launch the ultimate real-life road trip to demonstrate Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil can actually last 20,000 miles. No labs or simulated environments—just the open road.”
