Oil and Gas Rig Counts Slip in Oklahoma and the Nation

Figures from Baker Hughes Co. and the Independent Oil and Gas Service indicate a nationwide drop of at least 8 units in the latest weekly oil and gas rig count. Oklahoma’s count fell by 3 rigs in the past week to reach 124 still seeking new energy.

The two rig accounting firms reported a total of 928 oil and gas rigs in the U.S. with a drop of 5 oil rigs down to 743. The number of gas rigs fell to 185.

But the total rig count is 389 more than a year ago when the count was 539. In the past year, there has been an addition of 311 oil rigs and 80 gas rigs.

Of the most active states with oil and gas operations, only North Dakota saw an increase in the past week. Its count grew by one to reach 51. Texas slipped by 4 to reach 444 while New Mexico remained at 69 and Kansas fell by one to reach 348. Colorado stayed at 38 rigs while Louisiana dropped one to reach 65.

The Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico added one to reach 384 rigs while the Mississippian in Oklahoma and southern Kansas added one to hit 5. The Granite Wash in western Oklahoma fell by one to have a total of a dozen working rigs. The Eagle Ford in South Texas dropped six rigs to reach 63. The Woodfords in Oklahoma remained at 13.
