Massive wildfires that burned tens of thousands of acres of land and destroyed some homes in northwestern Oklahoma resulted in an air quality health advisory issued Tuesday by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.

The advisory indicated 8 counties in the northwest and the eastern edge of the Panhandle were affected by the smoke. The air was considered to be unhealthy for sensitive groups such as the elderly and those who have lung problems.

The DEQ indicated air quality monitors had detected concentrations of fine particulate matter considered to be unhealthy. Children, the elderly and again those with respiratory or heart disease were urged to avoid prolonged outdoor exertion.
