Rig Counts Continue to Grow in Oklahoma and the U.S.

For a second straight week, rig counts in Oklahoma and across the U.S. increased significantly with Oklahoma adding 5 rigs while the national count grew by 18.

Oklahoma’s now up to 96 working rigs. That compares to the 88 rigs reported one year ago at this time, according to Houston-based Baker Hughes Co.

The U.S. count grew by 18 to reach 712, exceeding last year’s total of 619 at this time. That’s an increase of 93 oil and gas rigs over a year ago. In the past week, the increase included 15 oil rigs to reach 566 and 3 more gas rigs making a total of 145 gas rigs.

Canada increased its count by 3 to reach 345. But that’s an increase of 114 over the past year.

The Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico remain the most active play in the nation with 219 working rigs, an increase of 10 over the past week. And the 219 count compares to the 182 reported one year ago.

Oklahoma’s increase of 5 rigs in the past week includes one more in the Granite Wash where the total count is ten, up from 13 a year ago. The Mississippian remained at 2 rigs, down from eleven last year. The Woodfords in the state added one rig to reach a total of 6.

The Eagle Ford in south Texas added 5 rigs to reach 54, still ten below last year’s count at this time.

Of the oil and gas-active states, Texas is up to 351, an increase of 9 from last week and far more than the 281 rigs reported a year ago. North Dakota added one to reach 36. The addition was four in New Mexico where there are 42 working rigs.  Louisiana added two to reach 53 while Colorado dropped 3 rigs to hit 25.

The state of Kansas, according to the Red Top Report from the Independent Oil and Gas Association increased its rig count by 2 in the past week to reach 27. A year ago, it had 21 active rigs.
