As Oklahoma and other states fight the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan to eliminate coal-fired power plants, Canada announced this week it plans to phase out coal-fired electricity by 2030.

Environment Minister Kathleen McKenna says her country’s goal is to assure that 90 percent of Canada’s electricity comes from sustainable sources by that time. That’s an increase from 80 percent today.

“Taking traditional coal power out of our energy mix and replacing it with cleaner technologies will significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, improve the health of Canadians and benefit generations for years to come,” said McKenna.

She explained that four of Canada’s 10 provinces still use coal-based electricity.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government also is adopting a broader climate change plan including implementation of a carbon tax.
