Baker Hughes: Rig Counts Jump in the Texas Permian Basin

The number of active U.S., Canadian and international rigs surged dramatically this week, according to the Baker Hughes rig count released on Friday.

The U.S. rig count rose by 17 to reach 481 active rigs after hitting a record low of 404 in May. Overall, the U.S. is down 403 rigs from last year’s figures.

For North American operations, Baker Hughes reported 15 new oil rigs and 2 new gas rigs this week.

Leading the pack with the largest gain, Texas added 13 rigs last week, bringing the cumulative number of active rigs to 230. A year ago, Texas had 389 rigs.

New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Ohio gained one rig each while California lost one active rig for the week.

Oklahoma remained unchanged from last week’s count of 61. Overall, Oklahoma’s rig count is down 42 rigs from last year’s count of 103.

Canada is up by four rigs to 126 since last week. In general, Canada remains down 85 rigs when compared with data from a year ago.

International rigs saw a growth of 11 rigs since June, rising to a total of 938. Overall, there are 180 less international rigs when compared with data from last July.

The Permian basin, covering a wide swath of land in west Texas and southeastern New Mexico, saw an increase of 12 rigs for a current total of 189, but is still down by 66 compared to last year’s rig count.

Granite Wash basin, covering Beckham, Greer, Kiowa and Washita counties in western Oklahoma, saw an increase of two rigs for a current total of six, but is still down by ten compared to the rig count last year.

Utica and Williston areas increased rig counts by one last week.

The Haynesville play, covering counties in northwestern Louisiana, southwestern Arkansas and east Texas, lost a rig. The Eagle Ford shale play in south Texas’ western gulf basin also saw a loss of one rig.
