Oklahoma Wind Farm Operator Expands into Egypt

Paris, France-based EDF Renewable Energy, a firm with extensive wind farm operations and construction underway in Oklahoma, signed a deal this week to develop operations in Egypt. Three of the five memoranda will involve development of projects in wind power and solar energy in partnership with an Egyptian electric group. Another project will involve thermal engineering while the last will include implementation of a projected gas-fired power plant.

EDF has a history of working for 60 years with Egypt’s electricity companies. The company is in the process of construction the Great Western Wind Project located in Woodward and Ellis Counties of Oklahoma near the base of the Panhandle. Work began this year and the wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.

The wind farm will include more than 80 wind turbines providing power equivalent to avoiding more than 600,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.

The company also signed a deal last year to supply power to Google, including Google’s operations in northeastern Oklahoma.
