Rig Counts Slip Again in Oklahoma and the U.S.

The latest weekly oil and gas rig count showed declines in Oklahoma and the nation, according to Baker Hughes Company of Houston, Texas. Oklahoma’s count fell by one in the past week to reach 66 compared to the 136 a year ago. The nation’s rig count dropped by four more to reach 476, down a total of 593 over the past year when it once was 1,069 working rigs.

Over the past week, the number of oil rigs in the U.S. grew by one to reach 387 while the number of gas rigs fell by 5 to 89. In the past year, the oil rig count tumbled 538 and the number of gas rigs slipped 153. The offshore rig count stands at 27, down 10 from a year ago.

Canada’s rig count fell by 29 in the past week, reaching 69. Over the past week, the number of oil rigs fell by 16 to reach 12. Gas rigs fell by 13 to reach 57.

While Oklahoma’s rig count is down by one in the past week, Colorado remained steady at 12; Kansas fell by one to reach 8; and Louisiana stayed at 49. The rig count in New Mexico slipped by two to reach 13 while the rig count in North Dakota dropped by one to reach 31.

The count in Texas increased by two to hit 217 compared to the 465 reported one year ago.

Of the various oil plays, the Ardmore Woodford in Oklahoma stayed even at two compared to the five a year ago. The Arkoma Woodford dropped by one to reach three while a year ago, there were six active rigs in the play.

The Granite Wash in Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle stayed at 8 compared to 24 a year ago. The Mississippian Lime dropped by one to reach seven working rigs. The Permian Basin in west Texas stayed at 152 while the D-J Niobrara in Colorado stayed at 15. The Eagle Ford in south Texas added two, reaching 45.
