Refunds Coming for Excel Energy Customers Over Nuclear Fuel Issue

The Associated Press reports Excel Energy customers in North Dakota will get a refund as part of an ongoing settlement in the company’s fight with the federal government over how spent nuclear fuel was stored. The North Dakota Public Service Commission voted this week to approve a refund totaling $700,000 or nearly $3 per customer.

Excel Energy is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and faced extra costs after the U.S. Energy Department failed to remove spent fuel from two Minnesota nuclear plants facing a 1998 deadline. Excel finally made a $100 million settlement five years ago with the federal government. It has since made refunds to customers in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and the Dakotas.
