Bakken Oil Pipeline Wins Last Permit from State of Iowa

The state of Iowa has given the final go-ahead for a new Bakken oil pipeline that will move oil from North Dakota to Illinois. The Iowa Utilities board voted recently to issue the last state permit needed for the Dakota Access oil pipeline being built by Energy Transfer Partners and Phillips 66.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers still must give their approval but final reviews are underway.

The pipeline will cross through 18 counties in Iowa and stretch 346 miles from North Dakota to Illinois.

The move to grant the final permit was opposed by residents who staged a rally outside the meeting site of the Utilities Board. Lawsuits are expected over the project that has been in development since 2014 after the governor of North Dakota urged the industry and the government to allow more pipelines to be built to keep up with his state’s vast oil production.
