Trucker shortage has some pushing for teenage truck drivers

Imagine a teenager just out of high school driving an 18-wheeler down the interstate? It’s what some are proposing in the face of a nationwide shortage of truck drivers.

Critics contend such a move would only increase the dangers on the nation’s highways. But there are bills in the U.S. House and the Senate to make such a drastic move.  The bills are co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas.

His bills propose that people under 21 who have commercial drivers’ licenses be allowed to take their cargo across state lines, according to the Associated Press. Current law requires truckers to be at least 21 before they can obtain a CDL allowing them to drive big trucks across state lines.
