Massive Gas Turbine Arrives at GRDA

It’s called the largest and most efficient gas turbine and it arrived this week at the Grand River Dam Authority by way of the McClellan-Kerr Navigation System. The barge carrying the massive turbine, called the largest in the world arrived at the Port of Catoosa.

The turbine is made by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and is capable of providing electricity to more than 300,000 homes.

“It just gives us a greater diversity across the different types of generation resources we have, and when you have the diversity, that also helps reliability and that also helps keep rates down for our customers,” said Justin Alberty, a spokesman for the GRDA.

He said natural gas will fuel the turbine and make it one of the most environmentally friendly options available to generate power as that plant is transitioned from burning coal.
