Technology to be focus of Corporation Commission meeting

Advanced Technology Market Trends Q2 2025 | DPR Construction

While dealing with power demands from proposed data centers, transmission lines, battery storage systems and rate requests from utilities, Oklahoma Corporation Commissioners are also faced with technology challenges.

It will be the discussion of a meeting Wednesday by the regulators whose sole topic is “Educational presentations and discussion on Advanced Transmission Technologies and other grid-enhancing technologies in Oklahoma.”

Advanced technologies apply as new laws also hit the commission, such as the High Voltage Electric Transmission Facility Act, passed last year in the state legislature. It requires utilities and other developers to file their applications with the commission. The law also requires developers to provide notice to county commissions, landowners and other parties.

One such project was heard this week during a hearing before an administrative law judge at the commission. The request is the $260 million replacement transmission line by AEP Oklahoma Transmission to improve electrical service in Carter, Comanche and Stephens counties. AEP indicated the project is expected to be completed by the end of December 2029.

Following the hearing on Monday, the ALJ recommended to the commission that AEP Oklahoma Transmission complied with the statutory requirements and “is in the public interest.”

Corporation commissioners anticipate a signing of the order within the month.
