Steady oilfield activity continues in Oklahoma and the U.S.

Wilmoth: Drilling activity slows in Oklahoma

Another strong week of oil and gas drilling in Oklahoma was reported in the latest Baker Hughes Rig Count released Friday.

Oklahoma’s count was unchanged with a total of 45 rigs. It compares to 49 rigs reported a year ago by Baker Hughes.

The U.S. count was 550 with a drop of one rig compared to a week earlier. The decline included a loss of two oil rigs, leaving 407 still actively drilling in the plays. But there was a gain of one gas rig for a total of 134. The offshore rig count declined one to 17 while the miscellaneous total was unchanged at 9.

Oklahoma’s count of 45 rigs compared to 230 in Texas where the count was unchanged from the prior week. New Mexico’s total grew one to 102 and North Dakota’s total of 26 was unchanged. Louisiana recorded a drop of two rigs to 37.

Kansas is down to only 8 rigs, according to the Red Top Rig Report which says the state recorded a loss of 13 rigs in the past month.

Colorado was unchanged at 14, Alaska stayed at 11 and California saw no change with 7 active rigs. Other states were also unchanged—Ohio 13, Pennsylvania 20, Utah 16, West Virginia 7 and Wyoming 17 rigs.

The nation’s total rig count of 550 is down 43 from a year ago and the decline included a loss of 79 oil rigs but a gain of 32 gas rigs. The miscellaneous count is 4 rigs higher than last year at this time.
