A week after the Sand Springs Planning Commission approved rezoning of land for a proposed Google data center, residents have launched a recall effort against the city council.
KRMG Radio News reports that residents gathered more than 130 signatures for each member of the council in just four hours. The radio news operation quoted Kyle Schmidt, President of Project Sand Springs Alliance, a group fighting the project called “Project Spring.”
“Most of us learned everything that we know about data centers last November. We had heard the term thrown around at Pryor campus and so we kind of knew, but we didn’t know [what] the impact was or how big it would really be or the kind of energy consumption it would have, [or] the potential water impact,” said Schmidt. “I mean, we didn’t know anything about it until it landed in our backyard and we had to learn about it really quick.”
His organization and many of those who signed the recall petition complain there has been a lack of transparency about the project and a lack of citizen input at city hall.
