The risks facing Oklahoma’s power grid will draw attention Wednesday when Oklahoma Corporation Commissioners meet to discuss a new 2026 Regional Risk Assessment made by the Midwest Reliability Organization.
Oklahoma is one of several midwest states that fall under the MRO’s assessment and the group’s new report is designed to serve as a critical roadmap for the electric utility industry, identifying the most significant threats to the reliability and security of the bulk power system across the region’s 16 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces.
As the power grid undergoes a transformation not seen in over 50 years—driven by new technology, evolving policy, and rising customer expectations—the 2026 RRA highlights a system being tested to its limits.
“A reliable and secure power grid is more than a convenience; it is essential to our economy and daily lives,” said MRO’s Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, RIchard Burt. “As we electrify more of our economy, our dependence on the bulk power system—the backbone of North America’s electricity network—has never been greater.”
Its key findings included 7 priorities but what was classified as an “extreme” finding was the listing of “uncertain energy availability.” Others classified as “high” concern were: Nation-State threats, Generation outages during extreme cold weather, Supply chain compromise, Inadequate inverter performance and modeling, Material and equipment unavailability, and Malicious insider threat.
The Midwest Reliability Organization (MRO) is a Regional Entity of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). Together, the Regions and NERC are referred to as the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) Enterprise.
The ERO Enterprise operates under section 215(e)(4) of the Federal Power Act with oversight from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in the United States, and under other agreements in Canada.

More than 260 organizations in the MRO region participate in the production and delivery of electric power to roughly 28 million people.
