Most of $4.4 billion meant for national EV charging network “unspent” after 4 years

Remember the $4.4 billion Congress approved during the Biden administration to create electric vehicle charging stations on U.S. highways?

A recent report revealed only 2 percent set aside four years ago has been spent. Oklahoma, while not among the five states that have spent none of the money, is close to joining the ranks of Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada and Wyoming.

The funding came under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program and according to a report by E&E News, states have asked the federal government to reimburse them for only $94 million. It cited data from the Federal Highway Administration, which oversees the NEVI program.

Oklahoma? According to a spokesman at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, the state received $66 million for the EV charging network.

“About $1.6 million has been spent on planning but nothing has been spent toward construction to date,” stated T. J. Gerlach, a Public Information Officer at ODO, in an exchange of emails with OK Energy Today.

“Of the $66 million Oklahoma received for EV charging infrastructure, currently we have not spent any of this money to construct these units. 11 sites have been awarded for construction but are not built at this time.”

He further explained the funding is currently in contract review with all of the awarded partiers.

E&E reported the new national data popped up in a recent legal filing made in a  lawsuit that Democratic states filed against the Trump administration for freezing their NEVI funds. It’s the latest sign that NEVI, an early part of the Biden administration’s push to accelerate EV adoption, is struggling to stand up charging stations on highways and build confidence in the EV future among road-trippers.
