Yukon City council approves another step toward data center

A proposed $1 billion data center in Yukon continues drawing questions from residents who again raised their voices at a meeting this week of the Yukon City Council.

Some residents again spoke against the project as council members voted Tuesday 4-1 to the creation of a new class in the city Code of Ordinances for industrial reclaimed water, a move that would pave the way for a data center’s use of “gray water” for its cooling operations.

Former Mayor Shelli Selby was the lone “no” vote on the proposal.

The Yukon Progress reported current Mayor Brian Pilmore is a supporter of the project by developer Beltline, contending it would allow the city to make significant quality of life investments for its residents.

City Manager Jeff Deckard is another supporter.

“We know that the data centers are a hot topic obviously for everywhere. Quite frankly, it should’ve been done several years ago because there’s several different businesses in town that could’ve used this,” he said.

The paper explained the city council still must review and give approval to a water use agreement as well as Oklahoma Gas and Electric reaching a deal to supply power for the massive project.

The data center is to be located on a 184-acre site west of Yukon near Highway 66 and Frisco Road.

While a majority of the city council supported another step for the data center, residents are voicing their angry responses on social media.

“This absolutely needs to NOT happen!”

“That amphitheater doesn’t sound too bad now does it?”

“Instead, building a gigantic development with 7 to 8 buildings for a data center on 350 acres of prime Yukon land makes no sense to me. They are an energy and water hog, and once built employ very few people. ”

“Just FYI regarding the “profits” they claim will be made. They are given so many incentives and tax breaks that there isn’t much.”

“How much do people want change in leadership? That answer will be answered on February 10th. The ward 1 election on that day, notify your people. This is the Kingsway, Kingsridge Estates, the Skyview area. This will show what people are really feeling in Yukon. 🇺🇸

“Sounds like the council has already made up its mind. Only thinking of money not residents

“sounds like city council isn’t really for the people.”

“My vote is NO for any Data Center, I’ll remember this on Election Day.”
