Two high-speed internet expansion projects funded by the Oklahoma Broadband office and the federal government have been completed in two southwest counties in Oklahoma.
Residents and businesses in Washita and Greer counties saw recent completion after being administered by the state office and funded through the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund.
The projects, completed by Dobson Fiber, are delivering what the State Broadband Office called “reliable, fiber-optic internet service” to 366 locations in and around Burns Flat and Granite. With the availability of fiber-optic technology, residents will now have access to faster speeds, improved reliability, and enhanced connectivity to support education, healthcare, business development, and everyday needs.
“These projects represent a major milestone for broadband expansion in Oklahoma,” said OBO Executive Director Mike Sanders. “As more projects come online, we will continue to hold ourselves accountable for delivering reliable, high-speed internet to every corner of the state.”
“Completing these first projects shows that Oklahoma’s broadband strategy is working and that public investments are turning into real connections for families and businesses,” said Oklahoma Broadband Governing Board Chair Jim Meek. “A year from now we will be proud of the progress made across the state in connecting rural communities.”
The OBO attended a groundbreaking event for Dobson Fiber in November 2024 to celebrate the start of all their projects. Dobson officials said they expect the rest of their projects to be finalized within the second quarter of 2026.
In 2022, the Oklahoma Legislature allocated $374 million in SLFRF funding to the Oklahoma Broadband Office to ensure that at least 95% of Oklahomans have access to high-speed internet. The completion of these projects marks an early success in that statewide effort. The deadline for ARPA projects to be operational is the end of 2026.
The Broadband Governing Board has awarded 159 high-speed internet projects of which more than 75 percent are currently under construction or closing out.
