As Oklahoma sees a battery energy storage system under development near Enid, a similar project has been rejected by Sale County Commissioners in central Kansas.
The Battery Energy Storage System proposed by Plus Power, a company headquartered in Houston, Texas, had originally won unanimous approval from the county’s planning board but county commissioners on a 4-1 vote reversed the approval. The recent denial was made after residents petitioned against it.
Plus Power applied for approval in 2023 using its Mountain Peak Energy Storage, LLC and proposed a 350-Megawatt BESS. It said the storage system would have been a supplemental power source for the grid during peak hours of power usage to cut down on the chances of blackouts.
The company said the storage facility was strategically located adjacent to Evergy’s existing transmission lines, poles and substation in the county.
Plus Power is operating 8 projects in Arizona, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Texas, and has developed 2 projects in Texas that are currently operating and owned by others. Plus Power currently has one more project in construction.
